Do not Disturb, or DND is an Android feature that you can activate to block the calls and texts from the people who are frequently bothering you. The Do Not Disturb feature lets you stay focused on your work without being bothered by friends or co-workers. Users can set their device to DND mode with a timer and it’s a very useful tool for anyone who needs to focus on something important. However, there are some times when the DND setting might come in handy, but for the wrong reasons. For example, if you’re trying to avoid a certain someone that you know will call and text you constantly, turning on DND may be one of your best bets. If this sounds familiar to you – keep reading!
Do Alarms Still Go Off On Do Not Disturb?
Yes, they do. I have somehow managed to set both my WhatsApp and iPhone alarms on Do Not Disturb and they still went off multiple times throughout the day, even after I turned them off.
Why You Shouldn’t Use Dnd For The Wrong Reasons?
1. Avoid A Stressful Situation:
If you’re trying to avoid a stressful situation, then turning on DND will be a bad idea. You should try to avoid stress in the first place and if you can’t then try to minimize how much stress you experience. DND can actually cause more stress than it relieves because of all the unanswered calls and texts that are piling up.
2. Avoid Unwanted Attention:
If you have your phone on Do Not Disturb mode and someone calls or texts you, they may still get your attention if they have their own phone with them that is not on Do Not Disturb. For example, if someone has their own phone with them that is not on Do Not Disturb, they will still get your attention when they call or text you even though their phone is not set to do so. The only way around this is by having both your own and other phones set to Do Not Disturb at the same time for maximum protection from unwanted attention.
3. Avoid Some People:
Because of the above reasons, you should only turn on Do Not Disturb when you have to avoid a specific person or situation. If you’re not sure if your phone is on Do Not Disturb or not, just look at the top right corner of your screen and see if it says “Do Not Disturb”. If it does, then your phone is on Do Not Disturb and you should turn it off.
4. Avoid Your Boss:
If you’re at work and you have your phone on Do Not Disturb because you need to focus, then your boss may still be able to reach out to you since they can see that it’s on Do Not Disturb. The only way around this is by having both phones set to Do Not Disturb at the same time for maximum protection from unwanted attention.
5. Avoid Someone’s Unwanted Attention:
If you have your phone on Do Not Disturb and someone calls you, they may still get your attention if they have their own phone with them that is not on Do Not Disturb. For example, if someone has their own phone with them that is not on Do Not Disturb, they will still get your attention when they call or text you even though their phone is not set to do so. The only way around this is by having both your own and other phones set to Do Not Disturb at the same time for maximum protection from unwanted attention.
How To Enable Do Not Disturb On Android
Turn On Do Not Disturb
Google includes Do Not Disturb as a default feature on its Pixel smartphones, but it’s not on by default on other Android devices – so you’ll need to turn it on first. To do this, open the Settings app on your device, and then select Sound & notification – or Settings – Sound & notification on some devices. Select Do not disturb to access the toggle. You can choose to turn on Do Not Disturb manually, or set a schedule.
Schedule Do Not Disturb
If you want to automatically enable Do Not Disturb at specific times, you can access the schedule setting. Scroll down to the Do not disturb section of the Sound & notification settings menu and select Schedule Do not disturb. You can then set Do Not Disturb according to your needs by toggling the various options. You can set Do Not Disturb to automatically turn on and off each day, or set specific start and end times for a one-off event.
Block Unwanted Calls And Notifications
If you want to keep certain people out of your Do Not Disturb settings, you can block certain callers. While in the Sound & notification menu section, select Call settings, and then Blocked numbers. From here, you can add numbers to your blocked list, and they’ll be unable to reach you via phone. You can also turn on the Do Not Disturb feature while you’re in a call, which will let you silence incoming calls and notifications while you’re engaged in a conversation. When you’re done with the call, you can turn off Do Not Disturb to let new calls through. You can also turn on the Block audible alerts setting to prevent notifications from appearing on your screen. This will ensure that you don’t get distracted by a flurry of notifications, but you’ll still be able to hear them – like alarms and timers.
Rotate Through Your Android Display Options
If you want to turn off your screen without preventing notifications from appearing, you can turn on rotation lock. This will prevent your screen from rotating when you turn your phone, and you can use a quick gesture to deactivate rotation lock. Google recommends that you turn off automatic brightness, as it can be distracting, and instead set a specific brightness level to minimize distraction. You can also turn on the Ambient light sensor, which will let your device adjust the brightness according to the amount of light in the room. You can also turn on the Always on display setting. This will let your Android device remain on, and show the clock, any upcoming alarms, and any incoming notifications. You can enable or disable the Always on display, and set specific start and end times to turn it off automatically.
Change Your Ringtone And Vibrate-Only Options
If you want to mute your device completely, you can do so via the Volume quick settings menu. You can also turn on the Vibrate when ringing only option, which will let you know that you have an incoming call, but won’t disturb anyone else around you. You can also change the default ringtone to silence. From the Sound & notification menu section, select Sound – or Sound settings on some devices. You can then change the Ringtone option and select Silent. You can also add a new ringtone and select the Ringtone option. You can also change the media volume option. This can be useful if you’re trying to keep your device on, but not disturb anyone next to you.
Enable Bedtime Do Not Disturb
If you want to automatically enable Do Not Disturb at a certain time each night, you can set a Bedtime Do Not Disturb schedule. Scroll down to the Do not disturb section of the Sound & notification settings menu and select Bedtime. You’ll then be able to set a specific time for Do Not Disturb to automatically turn on, and how long it should remain active for. You can also enable Do Not Disturb during specific times, like when you’re sleeping, or at a specific location – like work or school. To do this, scroll down to the Do not disturb section of the Sound & notification settings menu and select More. Here, you can toggle on Scheduled Do not disturb, and then select the specific times or locations that you want to enable Do Not Disturb for.
Conclusion
Now that you know how and when to use the Do Not Disturb feature on your Android device, you can make the most of it. If you are someone who is easily distracted and you often find yourself getting distracted while working, then the DND feature is a great way to stay focused. The DND feature can also come in handy if you are expecting an important call or text. The DND feature is a useful tool, but it can also be abused. If you constantly use the DND feature when you are around specific people, you are probably misusing the feature.
